Farm Income Still Not Tax Ready?

Farm and packing workers often have several employers, labour-hire businesses or short jobs. Check every payer and statement before lodging.

Farm worker checking Australian Income Statement records

Key points

  • Check the legal payer or labour-hire name, not only the farm name.
  • Review every employer and payslip for the income year.
  • Unfinalised figures may change after you lodge.

Why farm income may stay Not Tax Ready

The employer may not have completed its finalisation declaration, payroll details may need correction, or the payer may be a labour-hire provider with a different name. Separate employers can finalise at different times.

Checks to complete

  1. Open each Income Statement in ATO online services.
  2. Match the legal employer name with the payslip and bank deposit.
  3. Compare gross income, tax withheld and allowances.
  4. Check short jobs and previous farms.
  5. Ask payroll when finalisation or a correction is expected.

Do not confuse TFN and ABN income

Employee income and genuine contractor income use different records. Holding an ABN does not by itself decide whether a worker is a contractor. Check the actual engagement and documents.
