Deductions

Tax Deductions in Australia

Deductions generally need to be connected to earning income, paid by you and supported by records.

Deduction basics

Australian tax returns may include deductions for work-related costs. Personal expenses and unsupported claims are usually difficult to include.

Common work-related expenses

  • Tools, uniforms and protective items
  • Work from home costs
  • Phone and internet work use
  • Vehicle or travel expenses related to work
  • Training or professional costs connected to your work

ABN expenses

If you earn ABN income as a sole trader, your business-related expenses may also need to be reviewed. Keep receipts, invoices, bank records and platform reports.

A useful rule of thumb: the expense should be work-related, paid by you and supported by a record.
