Key points
- A smaller refund can be correct.
- Check all income, tax withheld, deductions and assessment adjustments.
- An amendment can increase a refund or create additional tax payable.
Why a refund may be lower
The outcome can change because income increased, less tax was withheld, a deduction was not available, Medicare levy applied, or the ATO offset an amount against another tax debt. Comparing your refund with another person is not a reliable test.
Documents to review
- Notice of Assessment and lodged return
- Income Statements, payslips and ABN income records
- Receipts and work-use calculations
- Medicare and residency information
When an amendment may be needed
The ATO amendment process can correct an error or omission, such as missing income, a missed deduction or an employer update after lodgment. Wait until the original return has been processed and check the applicable amendment time limit.
Review and amendment support
- Document and refund calculation review only: $50
- Tax return amendment support: $250 + GST
These fees do not guarantee an additional refund. The review may also identify tax payable or further information requirements.
