Working Holiday Tax Return

Working holiday makers and students who earn income in Australia may need to lodge a tax return depending on their income, visa and tax residency.

When a return may be needed

If you worked in Australia and tax was withheld from your pay, a tax return may be needed to finalise your position and check whether a refund or amount payable applies.

Documents to prepare

  • TFN and Income Statement
  • Bank details
  • Passport or visa information
  • Work-related expense receipts
  • Current contact details if applying from overseas

Students

Students who work in Australia may also need to check their income, tax withheld and tax residency. The answer depends on the facts for the financial year.

Online applications can be completed from overseas, and an Australian phone number is not required.
